From the downtown ferry terminal, Fullers Ferries, among others, operate regular services to most of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. From other ports you can catch scheduled fishing charters or organise your own. The main point is, which ever way you access the marine park, once you've cast off, it's all yours to enjoy.
Waiheke Island is no longer a retreat; it's where you arrive. There are an ever-increasing number of residents who commute to Auckland City everyday, so ferries run regularly. You'll find boutique wineries and fine restaurants aplenty, with beautiful beaches and luxury resorts to match.
Great Barrier is like Waiheke was about 30 years ago – not so easily accessible, nor well settled, but fascinatingly wild and full of history. Kawau Island, on the other hand, features a glamorous drawcard in Mansion House Bay – the stately homestead and gardens of Sir George Edward Grey, twice governor of early New Zealand.
| Beaches |
|
With two long coastlines, there's no shortage of choice for places to swim. For those who like the power and thrill of a surf beach, there is the west coast. For those who prefer gentler conditions, there are many more secluded bays dotted around the Waitemata Harbour and East Coast Bays. |
| Wining & Dining |
 |
Because Auckland is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world, virtually all of the world's cuisines are available here in abundance. The best way to find a restaurant offering a particular cuisine is to look in the local Yellow Pages directory. |
| Shopping |
 |
Auckland is a shopper's dream. The retail zones of the inner city, Ponsonby, Parnell, Newmarket, Remuera and Mt Eden cater to all kinds of styles. You can find the top fashion labels from Europe to funky, alternative labels and the fashion boutiques of local designers |
| Native Forests |
 |
To have enormous tracts of native rainforest – or bush, as we say – in close proximity to the city, is a natural luxury for many locals and visitors. To the west lie the sprawling Waitakere Ranges forming a barrier to the Tasman Sea. To the south lie the Hunua Ranges. Most of Auckland's fresh water is collected in massive dams here. |
| Hauraki Gulf Marine Park |
 |
Hauraki Gulf Marine Park has many islands to explore. Most are accessible by regular ferry services: Rangitoto - is an extinct volcano. Walk to the summit for spectacular views. Motuihe - is also a very popular spot for picnics. Kawau - see Governor Grey's historic Spacious, modern living areas. Your home away from homestead in Mansion House Bay. |
| Tiritiri Matangi - a rare bird sanctuary open to visitors. Waiheke - once home to hippies and farmers, it's now a chic resort island. Pakatoa - a peaceful resort island with a nine-hole golf course. Great Barrier - a great escape from the city. |
